What is occupational therapy for children?
Occupational therapy for children and young people aims to promote optional well-being, function, independence and productivity within the context of their lifestyles and environments. (Source: Education Queensland).
The primary goal of occupational therapy is to help children to reach their potential in the everyday activities that are appropriate to their stages in life. Occupational therapists work with children on fine and gross motor skills, coordination, drawing and writing skills, self-care, leisure skills, sensory difficulties, play and social or behavioural skills.
Difficulties in these areas may be due to delayed development, low muscle tone, learning difficulties, and diagnosed conditions including Down Syndrome, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Cerebral Palsy and Autism Spectrum Disorder.
